Roman Discus LampDescription
Essential for lighting indoors, this clay (terra cotta) lamp was made in a mold, of a discus (round) form. It is decorated with the symbol of an urn, perhaps a trophy or perhaps a sign of mourning. The black surface is unusual, and if not related to a funeral ritual, may have been an attempt to appear as a more expensive metal lamp. Part of Lovelace Collection. Plain base.Collections
