Late Roman Silver Coin of Gordian IIIDescription
After the Severan dynasty, the Roman Empire suffered fifty years of short-lived rules by generals. Soldiers proclaimed the young Gordian emperor after his grandfather and father, Gordian I and II, were murdered. His image shows a clean-shaven face with a long nose and strong chin. Most interesting is that the fillet, tied at the nape of the neck, is now augmented by a series of vertical points, symbolic of divinity (sun rays). In following centuries, Roman rulers used this image which is closer to the modern concept of a royal crown.Collections
