Late Roman/Byzantine Silver Coin of Justinian IDescription
The long reign of Justinian the Great saw dramatic changes in the Roman world. To save Roman Christian civilization, in effect he preserved much of antique culture in his capital, Constantinople, but demanded a rigid obedience to church doctrine. This fusing of church and state is seen by historians as the basis of the Byzantine and later Russian empires, but also the reason why most Christians in the Near East were so alienated that Muslim power spread quickly there in the 600s. Note the return of a simplified, stylized representation, as the Classical Age evolved into the more religious-based Middle Ages.Collections
