Minted in the reign of Ptolemy II, this coin was shows his parents as rulers of Egypt. Although Ptolemy I had been one of Alexander the Great’s generals from Macedon, his son took the epithet “Philadelphus” (lover of his sister) when he adopted the Egyptian royal tradition of marrying sisters. Centuries later, the throne was left jointly to Ptolemy XII and his older sister Cleopatra VII, but she refused to marry him and would seek the help and affections of Julius Caesar. (285 – 246 BC)
