Shelf 3: Judaea After Nero - Roman Coin, SilverDescription
The silver coin is a half-shekel coin issued in the 3rd year of the revolt. On the obverse it has in Hebrew above the chalice: "Shekel (half) of Israel." The chalice has nine pearls around the rim and represents the one used by the high priest in the temple. The reverse has "Jerusalem the HolyÓ above a pomegranate sprig. The three-lobed sprig represents the agricultural abundance of Israel. These silver coins were minted from silver stored in the Jerusalem temple, which was soon thereafter destroyed by the Romans.Collections
