Christopher Cowan “Kit” Anderson was born near Jeffersonville, GA, in 1840. He entered Mercer University in 1859 but left in his senior year to join the Confederate Army’s Sixth Georgia Infantry. He served in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida and returned to Penfield after the war ended. He completed an A.M. degree at Mercer, then worked as a teacher, civil engineer, and state geologist.
