Shelf 3: Daily Worship & Funeral Rites - Bronze Male FigureDescription
A bronze male figurine with knee britches and a conical hat. Its arms are missing, perhaps cut off. It is probably a male deity from Early Iron Age (about 1000 BC). Its unusual clothing is associated with the period following the collapse of the Bronze Age empires. It came from Byblos, an important Phoenician city. The leading Phoenician god was Baal; 800 years later, the former Phoenician colony of Carthage in North African would give rise to the great general Hannibal, whose name refers to the god.
