Shelf 3: Daily Worship & Funeral Rites - Bronze Female FigureDescription
A bronze female figurine with bare breasts and a snake intertwined around her legs. She probably depicts a female fertility deity. It is from Byblos in Phoenicia (Lebanon) and was made around 800 BC (Iron Age). The best-known Phoenician fertility goddess is Astarte (Ishtar), though the snake cult was not common there.
