Shelf 3: Daily Worship & Funeral Rites - Seated Woman with ChildDescription
A replica of a terracotta (clay) figurine of a seated woman holding a child. It is from Anthidon (Boeotia) in Greece and is from the 5th century BC. The original is in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, Greece. It probably served a votive purpose, perhaps a safe childbirth or recovery from illness. The later depictions of Madonna and Child would be similar to this Classical pose.
