Shelf 3: Daily Worship & Funeral Rites - Winged Terracota FigureDescription
A replica of a terracotta (clay) figurine from Roman Egypt, dated to the second half of the 2nd century AD. The figure of the winged god Eros (Cupid), preserved from the waist up, wears a sleeveless “chiton” tunic with a wide belt and crossed thongs at the chest, like the costume worn by charioteers in the hippodrome. In his left hand he holds the garlanded cornucopia (horn of plenty) brimming over with grape clusters. It is a unique Eros type, combining elements from the iconography of other figures. The original is located in the Benaki Museum in Athens.
