Shelf 2: Coins, Gods, & Grave Goods - Roman Bronze CoinDescription
A bronze coin of Emperor Diocletian who ruled from 284 to 305 A.D. The face of Diocletian is on one side with an inscription; the other side depicts Diocletian, atop a globe, receiving victory on a globe from the god Jupiter. Diocletian restored a disintegrating Roman Empire, as is symbolized on this coin. His efforts to enforce loyalty to his regime led to the Great Persecution, a bloody campaign against the Christians. Ten years after his rule ended, however, Constantine issued the decree granting religious freedom for all.
